Citizenship and social action focus of Imagineaction

February 8, 2011

Teachers have always stressed the importance of contributing to society, and they and their students have participated in social action projects for as long as there have been schools.

Unfortunately, citizenship and social action are often treated as separate concepts. To show the links between the two, the Canadian Teachers’ Federation’s (CTF) has launched a program, Imagineaction, which encourages students to look critically at their community and to identify social problems that need to be solved.

Resources developed for CTF by the Critical Thinking Consortium (TC2) and available on the Imagineaction website (www.imagine-action.ca) help teachers link active citizenship and social action.

Visit the Imagineaction website and create a profile under the teacher tab to access teacher resources and get information about project funding to help get your social action project started. You can apply for a subsidy of up to $750 per project at www.imagine-action.ca. Applications must be received by Friday, February 25, 2011, and projects must be completed by the end of the 2010/11 school year.
